LC 2011049573. ea vol: 24p. (Save Earth's Animals! Series). maps. photos. glossary. index. websites. Rosen / PowerKids Pr. 2012. PLB $22.60; pap. $8.25. Gr 2-4 These titles combine facts about biomes with information about the endangered animals that live there. Each book begins with a description of the biome, including the climate and the various habitats. Then five endangered creatures are introduced along with a map that shows where they live. Each book ends by encouraging readers to help save them. The texts consist of two paragraphs per spread in a large font and do not provide in-depth information, but they offer good introductory material about why these animals are endangered, critically endangered, or threatened; their habitats; their predators; and other factors contributing to their threatened status. The photos provide large, clear images of the animals described; however, some spreads featuring an endangered creature include a large picture of one of its predator on the left side, which is potentially confusing. Overall, these attractive books offer solid introductory information for reports. Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL
Grasslands, savannas, and prairies are different types of rolling plains found across the world. The spread of agriculture and climate change are two of factors affecting animals in this biome. Readers will be introduced to the Asian elephant--which is threatened by both habitat loss and poaching--and learn about efforts that are being made to save the elephants and other grassland animals.
