LC 2011049573. ea vol: 24p. (Save Earth's Animals! Series). maps. photos. glossary. index. websites. Rosen / PowerKids Pr. 2012. PLB $22.60; pap. $8.25. Gr 2-4 These titles combine facts about biomes with information about the endangered animals that live there. Each book begins with a description of the biome, including the climate and the various habitats. Then five endangered creatures are introduced along with a map that shows where they live. Each book ends by encouraging readers to help save them. The texts consist of two paragraphs per spread in a large font and do not provide in-depth information, but they offer good introductory material about why these animals are endangered, critically endangered, or threatened; their habitats; their predators; and other factors contributing to their threatened status. The photos provide large, clear images of the animals described; however, some spreads featuring an endangered creature include a large picture of one of its predator on the left side, which is potentially confusing. Overall, these attractive books offer solid introductory information for reports. Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL
The tundra is a cold, dry biome found in the Arctic and above the tree line, high in the mountains. Readers will explore these areas and learn about the animals that live in this harsh environment. Readers will also discover the threats that these animals face, and how groups are working to preserve the animals that make the tundra their home.
