Without deleting all the butt cracks and toilet references, author-illustrator Do nonetheless tones down the gross and anal humor in this sequel to his simultaneously published opener, WeirDo?. What's left is a sweet, if still frantic and funny, tale in which hapless, half-Vietnamese narrator Weir's plan to attend the birthday party of heartthrob Bella ("seventh-best-looking girl in class") as a toilet-paper-wrapped mummy falls afoul of a sudden rainstorm, but his last-second alternative costume, a vending machine festooned with real snacks, saves the party when Bella's mom forgets supplies. Better yet, when the magician cancels, Weir sees his dad, a world-class burper, and other members of his quirky extended family step into the breach. Designed to cater to younger or less expert readers, the narrative features short sentences with select phrases and exclamations printed in a different color, and line drawings on every page that, more often than not, take up most of the space. A more palatable alternative to tales built on Wimpy Kid style pranks and mockery.
