Interracial marriage is illegal in California, but they still hope to get married one day. But three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, racism and hatred for the Japanese heightens as America enters WWII. Taichi and other Japanese Americans are sent to internment camps across the nation. Evalina and Taichi must both hold on to their love and beliefs if they hope to survive and build a life together. Morrill produces a historical novel that blends devastating true events with lifelike fictional characters as it brings history to life. Similar to Kathy Kacer's The Sound of Freedom (2018), Morrill's story takes place during WWII and highlights the U.S. internment of Japanese Americans. Told in Evalina's and Taichi's alternating voices, readers get a firsthand look at both characters' worlds and perceive the struggles of the Japanese Americans during WWII.
