Arthur the lovable aardvark refuses to believe that his little sister, D. W., can read until she proves it by reading ten words, which children can easily read through the pictorial context. The cartoonlike illustrations are humorous, inviting, and homey. The paperback edition includes stickers that can be matched to the colored words in the text, creating a rebus.
