PreS-Gr 3-It's nearly Valentine's Day, and someone has been sending anonymous valentines to Arthur. He secretly hopes it is Sue Ellen. In anticipation, he makes a mushy valentine for her, placing it in her Valentine box. That day after school, his friends discover he is receiving the valentines, and they tease him. On Valentine's Day, he receives a ticket to a movie from his secret admirer with instructions on where to sit. He notices that the writer has inadvertently written (and erased) her name-it's Francine. When Francine meets him at the movie theater, he offers her a kiss. She closes her eyes, puckers up, and Arthur exits the movie theater, leaving chocolate candy kisses in his seat. This book and cassette recording of Marc Brown's book (Little, 1980) is fresh and enjoyable. A polished musical score by welcomes readers to this book. Marc Brown does a superb job of narrating. Throughout the reading, slick background music constantly changes with the mood of the story. A group of child-like voices joins Brown in reciting the chant teasing Arthur. One side of the cassette has page-turn signals. At the end of the book, Brown describes some of the action taking place in the illustrations. Youngsters will love this polished performance.- Stephanie Bange, Kettering-Moraine Branch, Dayton & Montgomery County Public Library, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
