This handsome volume in the African American Trailblazers series (6 titles) considers Congressman John Lewis's lifelong commitment to fighting for equality. This concise, very readable biography briefly covers the history of slavery in the U.S. and the political climate into which Lewis was born in 1940s segregated Alabama. The majority of the book details his years as a civil rights activist with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Lewis's involvement in the Selma March, the Freedom Rides, and the Mississippi Freedom Summer. Today, Lewis continues to "make good trouble" and to advocate for LGBTQ and immigrants rights. This well-designed book contains numerous glossy color and historical B&W photos, educational sidebars, chronology, a glossary, source notes, further information, and a bibliography and index. Lewis's remarkable and courageous life story serves as an inspiration to us all.

The history of the United States is filled with African American leaders who heroically fought for equality through words and deeds. These men and women sacrificed their safety and, in some cases, their lives for the cause. One of the most courageous among them is John Lewis, who has been on the front lines of this struggle for decades. From the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s to his present-day work as a United States Congressman, Lewis has fought for equality for all Americans. This book uses photographs, sidebars, and primary sources to examine his greatest achievements, both historical and contemporary, and explore how his bravery and dedication to nonviolent direct action have effected real change in the United States.
