This six-volume set is a great and informative reflection of today's headlines. Darfur: African Genocide is an in-depth exploration of the crisis in Darfur, the history of the conflict, and why it matters to the rest of the world. There have been nearly 500,000 deaths in the region since 2003 because of the attacks on villages by the Sudanese Army. Xavier explains the crisis, the geography of the region, the history up to the present day, and the pressure on the United Nations to make the region a top priority. He defines genocide versus ethnic cleansing in a clear and concise way. Doping: Athletes and Drugs is a comprehensive overview of the sports and sports figures most often connected with drug scandals, why athletes resort to drug use, the different types of drugs used for physical enhancement, and the methods used to police doping. These short volumes are packed full of information. The glossaries and Web sites at the end of each are most helpful. Other series titles include Tsunamis, Starvation in Africa, and Domestic Spying and Wiretapping.-Kathie Fitch.

Both timely and enduring, this book explores the current and continuing Darfur conflict and provides the historical context. While explaining the background behind this violent conflict and the various causes that have contributed to it, it explores geography, environmental hardship, religion, national and regional politics and government, and the development of rebel resistance groups. It also describes the international reaction to the violence, and talks about what the future might hold.
