The aptly named Little Scientists, Big Questions series (4 titles) guides early readers through some of nature's most alluring mysteries. Here we learn about the general life cycle of trees, with focus being placed on leaves, their physical changes, and their basic role in a tree's biology. Owen takes us through the seasons, and she uses everyday terms ("a tree needs food so it can grow bigger and be healthy") before warning readers to "get ready for some big science!" Things get a touch more technical with a recipe for tree food that involves some jargon (carbon dioxide, stomata, chlorophyll). The presentation is colorful, employing cartoon children, speech bubbles, and color-coded diagrams to get the ideas across comfortably, though the page design feels scattered at times. Overall, a serviceable introduction to botany.
