Daniel Coldstar takes his title as a Truth Seeker quite seriously. In this sequel to The Relic War (2017), the young man is off questing for the truth of his own history and adventuring through the galaxies. Accompanied by friends old and new, human and entirely alien, like small metal penguin Jasper and giant, flatulent trabasaur Alice the Hammertail, he's trekking to planets full of deadly creatures and plants in order to find out who he is, or was. Complicating his need for answers is the massive war that's taking place across the stars, and Daniel finds himself accidentally taking care of a group of young war orphans, promising them safety until their parents return. Pavlou still excels at the slow burn, letting out a few details at a time to keep middle-grade readers coming back for more. There's enough exposition that a reader new to the series could start here, but be sure to have both books on hand for young sci-fi fans.
