Necromancer Nedra, master of an army of undead corpses, has triumphed over Governor Adelaide, the woman responsible for the spreading plague of Wasting Death. That illness killed Nedra's entire family, and it was only because of her alchemical powers that Nedra was able to reanimate her sister, Nessie. Now, Nedra need only think and her army will fight and destroy for her, mindless under her control. But Nessie has lost her soul, and the very sight of her little sister as an empty revenant drives Nedra to further necromancy. Meanwhile, Nedra's former lover, the aristocrat Grey Astor, attempts to help the city fight off death magic, even as his father and his friend are hunted for treason. Can Astor save Nedra from the darkness she's running toward? This follow up to Give the Dark My Love (2018) is filled with creeping dread, and readers who once championed Nedra will now watch her fall. Newly minted necromancer Nedra (Give the Dark My Love, rev. 9/18) has only one goal--to fully restore life to her twin sister, whom she had previously attempted to raise from the dead. Meanwhile, love interest Grey allies himself with the Emperor in hopes of attaining a pardon for Nedra, who is under penalty of death for necromancy. Their encounters are romantic (even steamy), but Grey's love for Nedra can't overcome his distaste for her magic. The Emperor's deviousness is greater than it seems: will Grey and Nedra resolve their differences before they each become a pawn in the Emperor's game? The horror that fueled the first book gets dialed back a notch here, making for somewhat more comfortable reading (though still delivering substantial dismemberments and executions), while the romance and the characters' individual struggles come to the foreground. At the end, Revis delivers a clever expansion of the premise, which ties together multiple plot threads to close the duology in unexpected and highly gratifying ways.

The stunning finale of the epic fantasy duology from New York Times bestselling author Beth Revis. Alchemy student turned necromancer Nedra Brysstain has made a life-changing decision to embrace the darkness--but can the boy who loves her bring her back to the light before she pays the ultimate price?

Lunar Island is trying to heal. The necromantic plague that ravaged the land has been eradicated, and Emperor Auguste, the young and charming leader of the Allyrian Empire, has a plan: rid the island of necromancy once and for all. Though Greggori "Grey" Astor wants what's best for his people, he knows that allying himself with Auguste threatens the one person he loves most: necromancer Nedra Brysstain. Feeling like he already failed to save Nedra once, Grey becomes determined to help the Emperor rebuild Lunar Island while still keeping Nedra safe from harm.

Back at the quarantine hospital, Nedra's army of revenants are growing increasingly inhuman by the day. Wracked with guilt for imprisoning their souls, Nedra vows to discover a way to free the dead while still keeping her sister by her side.

But still reeling from the trauma of the plague, the people of Lunar Island are looking for someone to blame, and Grey can only protect Nedra for so long. And when Nedra and Grey are thrust into a battle with an even more terrifying adversary, Nedra will be pushed to the darkest depths of her necromantic powers. But can Grey let her go that far?
