Gr 4-6 This installment of the "Second Chance Ranch" series features 12-year-old Natalie Ramirez, the oldest of four sisters in a family who cares for animals on their way to find forever homes. While animal-loving young readers will adore the overarching themes of rescuing horses, kittens, and puppies, the story is really about the changing nature of human friendship. Just as the animals come and go, Natalie must come to terms with her best friend Sophie's move to Boston and the conflicted feelings of having a new, very different potential best friend, Darcy. Unlike horse-loving Texan Natalie, Darcy hails from Hawaii and enjoys things Natalie does not, like sushi, yoga, and French movies; she is even allergic to animals. How can one ever have two best friends, anyway? Echoing the "new girl" theme is the arrival of a mysterious new horse called Tango. Abrams presents relatable obstacles for kids while expertly connecting the animals' roles with the humans'. VERDICT The benevolent world of animal rescue will engage readers while Natalie's heartfelt ups and downs throughout make this friendship story shine. A strong purchase for large collections, especially where realistic animal stories circulate well. Jennifer Gibson, SUNY Cortland
Natalie has a lot on her plate. She can't seem to get Second Chance Ranch's newest rescued horse, Tango, to barrel race. She's also missing her best friend Sophia who recently moved away. A new girl in town, Darcy, seems like she could be bestie material, but she doesn't like to do any of the things Natalie and Sophia did together - and she's allergic to animals! Can Natalie help Tango learn a new skill while she learns a few of her own? At Second Chance Ranch, the Ramirez family works to find homes for all kinds of animals on their 200-acre ranch in Texas. Sisters Natalie (12), Abby (10), and twins Emily and Grace (9) all do their part to give each animal the second chance it deserves.
