Everyone's favorite middle-schooler, Greg Heffley, continues to get himself into trouble (mild) and concoct schemes (generally candy-related) in his eleventh outing in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. As Halloween looms near, its spooky, sugary influence can be felt in most of his diary's entries. The Spineticklers series is all the rage at school, but Greg's obsession with the Goosebumps-like books leads to peculiar nightmares. What's more, mean geese are stalking his neighborhood's streets, and there's a chance his family's Halloween decorations are bewitched. These things aren't bothering Greg too much, though, as he's focused on winning a jar of candy corn in a school competition and getting an invite to Mariana Mendoza's Halloween party. Laugh-out-loud moments abound, as fans of the series have come to expect, whether tucked into Kinney's signature doodles (such as Greg's disastrous attempt at playing the French horn); slapstick scenes; or Greg's imaginative, stream-of-conscience observations. Though Greg's clever ideas backfire more often than not, this just fuels the fun. Readers are definitely in for a treat with Kinney's latest.

Horn Book

Greg's mother thinks he's spending way too much time playing video games; she wants him to do something creative, like play the French horn. But Greg's creativity instead leads him to make a horror film, Night of the Night Crawlers. Middle-grade Wimpy Kid fans will find all they're expecting in this eleventh episode: Kinney's trademark cartoons paired with outrageous, audience-perfect humor.

In Double Down, Book 11 of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series from #1 international bestselling author Jeff Kinney, the pressure’s really piling up on Greg Heffley.

His mom thinks video games are turning his brain to mush, so she wants her son to put down the controller and explore his “creative side.” As if that’s not scary enough, Halloween’s just around the corner and the frights are coming at Greg from every angle.

When Greg discovers a bag of gummy worms, it sparks an idea. Can he get his mom to ease off by making a movie . . . and will he become rich and famous in the process? Or will doubling down on this plan just double Greg’s troubles?
