Maddie and Liam love artwork of all types and styles. One day, in a museum, they discover they can enter paintings, so they gleefully climb from one frame into another, immersing themselves in not just the styles but the worlds within. Together, they are soaked by waves in a realistic seascape, frightened by the neon burst of a pop art lion's roar, and caressed by the gentle strokes of an impressionist lakeside breeze, before finally climbing back into the painting that was their home all along. This latest Shankman-O'Neill collaboration is a delightful, tightly packed adventure that can support a conversation as detailed as an educator would like; there are nods to Degas, Van Gogh, and Lichtenstein, and our protagonists explore styles from medieval Renaissance work and impressionism to abstract expressionism as they literally transform to reflect the pieces they visit. While the ending is perhaps a bit saccharine for an otherwise original work, the tale itself is so well cadenced and expertly rhymed and alliterative that the text itself is a work of art.
