In 12-Story's typical, appealing format, this volume in the No Barriers series (8 titles) introduces 12 individuals who didn't let their disabilities stifle their artistic passion. Each double-page spread comprises a short profile highlighting the artist's talent and how he or she adapted a disability into success, several photographs, and a sidebar with related facts. Particularly commendable is the book's diversity: it includes different types of disabilities, both men and women, and a variety of races and nationalities. Other than Frida Kahlo and Octavia Butler, most of the artists will be new to readers. For instance, Antoine Hunter, who is deaf, leads his own dance troupe. Yu Xiuhua, with cerebral palsy, is one of China's best-known poets. A concluding section describes physical, sensory, and learning disabilities. An inspiring resource for real-world examples of overcoming adversity.
