The Polluted Planet series (4 titles) takes an intriguing approach in educating its readers on environmental issues and sustainability: it freaks them out. Through hypothetical situations me more likely than others explores the different ways in which humans are destroying the planet and proffers potential solutions. The scrapbook-like Nuclear Nightmare! describes a girl's life in a bunker following a nuclear disaster, as well as what lead to the crisis. The concept is fun and undeniably engaging, and the situations, though extreme, take their cues from fact. Collage-style illustrations accompany a text packed with action words, and activity-based back matter fits the theme. This inventive take on sustainability education just may spur readers to action.
