From the format to the gently comic story to the cozy, freewheeling artwork, everything works in this twelfth book in Rylant's series about grandfatherly Mr. Putter and his favorite companion, his orange-colored tabby cat. Mr. P. is all set to make soup, but his stove, Bessie, isn't cooperating. His sweet, elderly neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, offers her cooker while she goes out for the day, but Mrs. Teaberry's dog, Zeke, has plans for the surprised houseguests--and they don't involve cooking. Tender, funny, and absolutely delicious.

When Mr. Putter's stove breaks, he and his cat Tabby go next door to make soup while their neighbor Mrs. Teaberry is out. However, her pesky dog runs them both ragged, so when Mrs. Teaberry returns, she finds the soup unfinished and Mr. Putter and Tabby asleep. Expressive illustrations add to the humor of this twelfth book about the elderly companions.

K-Gr 3-In this episode, Mr. Putter and Tabby go to Mrs. Teaberry's house to make soup because their old stove, Bessie, is on the fritz. Her dog Zeke complicates things for them, for he is determined that the guests play with him, but in the end, they enjoy the best soup they have ever tasted. The chapters are short and satisfying, and new readers will enjoy Howard's cartoon illustrations. The antics of Tabby and Zeke will entertain young animal enthusiasts.
