A case study of a person suffering from each ailment introduces typical symptoms to readers. Three subsequent chapters describe the disorder's biology and progress, its history, and ways to treat and cope with it both as a patient and as support for the patient. Clear archival photos and photomicrographs support the text. Directory, reading list, websites. Glos., ind.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-Two well-designed and easy-to-use titles with accurate and reliable information. Colorful photos, micrographs, and sidebars appear throughout. Hicks outlines the many kinds of allergies, discusses their effects and triggers, and offers practical advice and coping strategies for sufferers. He describes the tests used to diagnose allergens and addresses the latest scientific advances to treat them, such as gene therapy. Hoffmann examines the mysterious infectious disease that has the same symptoms of many other illnesses, such as strep throat, colds, fevers, and fatigue. She describes the virus, its transmission, and current treatments. Both books are solid additions, but since there have been few advances in treating mononucleosis in recent years, Hoffmann's content is not much different from that in Paul Smart's Everything You Need to Know about Mononucleosis (Rosen, 1998) or Gustav Mark Gedatus's Mononucleosis (Capstone, 1999).-Caroline Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
