When Ronnie complains about winter's cold and how our ancestors didn't evolve to better handle the weather, her teacher, Miss Lernin, takes her on a magical adventure to the past to learn about evolution and prehistoric mammals. With not only different continents but also different time periods to touch on, there's a lot to cover, so the two basically discuss one animal for a sentence before instantly moving on to the next one. Though a slower pace may have been nice, this third book in Howard's prehistoric science series provides a great overview of these unusual animals and all the evolutionary changes they went through. Luckily, there are a few great jokes to make the experience more fun and to break up the different sections. Howard's full-color artwork features cartoonish, goggle-eyed humans and wonderfully realistic depictions of these forgotten creatures, all while hilariously capturing Miss Lernin's infectious enthusiasm and oddball humor. A worthwhile and engaging addition to any graphic nonfiction collection.

Abby Howard’s Mammal Takeover!—the third book in the Earth Before Us graphic novel series—travels through the Cenozoic Era, the Ice Age, and up to the dawn of humanity.

After the dinosaurs died out, Earth was by no means empty. There were still some little resourceful critters around who, without big predators to hunt them down, survived and thrived. Who were these scrappy creatures? Early mammals, our ancestors! In the Cenozoic Era, mammals rose to dominance and spread over the globe, resulting in woolly mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, and eventually all of humankind.

In this adventure, we meet the three kinds of mammals—monotremes, marsupials, and placental mammals—as well as the other amazing ancient beasts they shared the Earth with during the Cenozoic Era. The graphic novel tracks Earth’s history from 66 million years ago to present day, ending with an impassioned yet hopeful discussion of climate change.
