Starred Review Growing up, Stephen Curry enjoyed playing baseball, football, and golf as well as basketball, but with his father playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Steph had NBA dreams. While his small size limited his defensive capability, he made up for it with quickness, coordination, and constant practice on basic skills. His coach at Davidson College helped him realize his potential. After he joined the Golden State Warriors in 2009, early injuries preceded a steadily rising arc of prominence for both Curry and his team, which won the NBA championship in 2015, 2017, and 2018. This biography discusses Curry's gifts, his discipline, his personality, his outlook, his faith, his team-oriented style of play, and his accomplishments, from MVP honors to all-time shooting records. The occasional full-page grayscale illustration celebrates an event or creates a narrative through a sequence of pictures, most notably in a 12-page feature, "Instant Replay," showing the dramatic final seconds of a 2016 game. A columnist for Yahoo! Sports, Wetzel knows how to organize the facts and tell a good story. His insights into high school, collegiate, and professional basketball, along with his use of well-chosen quotes from insiders, make this book an unusually informative and enjoyable sports biography for young readers.

U.S. women's soccer player Morgan and pro-basketball guard Curry are featured in these fast-paced profiles. Wetzel effectively connects each star's innate skills, clutch play, and hard work with their character strengths and life stories. Wetzel's game-action accounts mix play-by-play sportscasting with color commentating. Quotes (unfortunately undocumented) and comic-style black-and-white illustrations (including a final twelve-page, action-packed "instant replay" game highlight) appear throughout the books.

In Epic Athletes: Stephen Curry , acclaimed journalist and bestselling author Dan Wetzel tells the inspiring, electrifying story of the NBA superstar, beginning a new series of sports biographies for young readers! Featuring comic-style illustrations by Zeke Peña! When you think of Stephen Curry, one word comes to mind: greatness. From shooting three-pointers with laser precision to his clutch ability to hit buzzer-beaters time and again, he has established himself as one of the best players in pro basketball. But greatness was never a guarantee for Steph. The son of a talented NBA player, he dreamed of one day playing professionally just like his dad. Yet Steph, who was always smaller and weaker than the competition, was told over and over that he would never be talented enough to be a college star or NBA player--let alone the MVP of the entire league. Through tenacity and hard work, he proved them all wrong and went on to dismantle the record books. With the high energy of a TV commentator, and featuring dynamic comic-style illustrations, this engaging biography tells the story of an NBA All-Star and the path he took to achieve his dreams. * "Wetzel knows how to organize the facts and tell a good story. . . an unusually informative and enjoyable sports biography for young readers." -- Booklist (starred review) A Junior Library Guild selection!
