Eight-year-old twins Shaquem and Shaquill Griffin vowed to play together in the NFL someday. And 15 years later, in 2018, they both took the field for the Seattle Seahawks. According to Harts, only 9 out of every 10,000 high-school football players will join the NFL. The goal was especially challenging for Shaquem, whose left hand had been amputated when he was four because of a congenital disorder. Besides practicing hard and finding his own ways to handle the football, he sometimes had to overcome his coaches' doubts as well. Griffin's story unfolds in a straightforward, informative way, enhanced by the many excellent color photos. It's an appealing, inspiring choice from the Disabilities Can't Stop Us! series (6 books), which also includes prominent figures in fields such as art, science, and government.

(Disabilities Can't Stop Us!). Rosenl / PowerKids . Aug. 2020. Tr. $26.25. Gr 4-6 These titles amplify the voices of famous people with disabilities and examine the obstacles they overcame. Each book provides basic biographical information about the subjects, and emphasis is placed on how they achieved success in their fields. Shaquem Griffin's story is especially amazing. Griffin, who is currently an NFL linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks, was born with amniotic band syndrome. Many of the profiled individuals created foundations or publicly advocated for others with similar conditions. The narratives should be interesting enough to young readers who are writing reports. Photographs feature close-ups of the subjects, and the action shots of Griffin are appealing. VERDICT Inspiring and informational, particularly the titles on Griffin and Helen Keller. These books will be nice additions to school and public libraries; purchase based on need.
