Horn Book (Mon Apr 01 00:00:00 CDT 2013)

Arnold's classic picture book about a boy whose jumped-on bed falls down through the floors of an apartment building, gathering companions and objects along the way, has been revised and newly illustrated but not improved. The crisp text of the original has been muddied; the understated pictures that were a perfect foil for the humor have been zanied up into a chaotic mess.

Publishers Weekly (Fri Oct 06 00:00:00 CDT 2023)

Is Walter jumping or dreaming when he crashes down through all the apartments below? """"A takeoff on a familiar and usually idle warning, this [story] should be a hit with anyone who has battled over jumping on the bed,"""" said PW. Ages 3-7. (May)

“If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a million times, no jumping on the bed!”

But Walter just can’t resist, so he ignores his father’s bedtime warning. Higher and higher he bounces gleefully, until his hair brushes the ceiling. But when he lands back on the bed—thump, creak, crack—it crashes right through the floor! Suddenly Walter finds himself visiting all the downstairs neighbors in his apartment building in a most unusual way!

“Hip, hip, hooray for this delightful urban fantasy, a comic morality tale that explores the consequences of ignoring that age-old ‘momilie,’ ‘If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a million times, no jumping on the bed!’”—School Library Journal
