In 1925, a relay team of mushers carried urgently needed medicine from Anchorage to Nome. This event inspired the first Iditarod (officially, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race), which took place in 1973. Every March, mushers and their dogs gather in Alaska for an event referred to as "the last great race on Earth." Mikoley notes the race's dangers, such as falling through ice or encountering wolves, as well as required stops intended to protect the dogs from hunger and exhaustion. Written in relatively short sentences, the text maintains an amiable tone, while colorful photos of dogs add to the book's appeal. Young readers with a love of dogs and a need for speed might want to check out this slender volume from the Race for Your Life series (6 volumes).
