Voice of Youth Advocates

Massie Block is a privileged, spoiled girl attending an all girls' school and used to setting trends and giving advice to the rest of the seventh graders. The goal for seventh grade is to be kissed and to belong to an exclusive clique. When clique member Alicia's glamorous cousin from Spain arrives, everything is thrown out of kilter, and Massie feels her power slipping. As she uses her daily delivery of lip-gloss, she tries to think of a way to bring down Spanish Nina's popularity. The point-of-view switches among the stereotypical, shallow characters. The girls are not nice or respectful to anyone-parents, adults, boyfriends, or other girls in the clique-unless there is something for them to gain. The girls live in fear that they will be out of the clique if they anger Massie by doing or saying the wrong thing. The writing relies on unimaginable similes and awkward verbs. Because the girls speak with a sneer, words like "ahb-vious" and "ah-mazing," fill the narration. Although Massie manages to reach her goal and receive a kiss from her boyfriend by the end of the book, nothing she has done has made this happen, and her actions have insured that the relationships between the girls in her clique and their boyfriends will end. The cover will make girls who like this genre grab the book, but only the most inexperienced readers will find it worth reading.-Cindy Faughnan.

The holidays are over and Massie's room is chock-full of new things from Santa: jeans, sweater, and a new . . . roommate? Once Claire unpacks, Massie's room feels more crowded than a Zac Posen sample sale. But what's worse, Claire isn't the only person moving into Massie's territory -- Alicia's hot cousin, Nina, shows up from Spain and starts edging in on all the Briarwood boys, including Massie's crush! Will Nina, with her super-tight mall clothes, make every boy in Westchester fall in love with her? Or will Massie toss her out faster than last season's Sevens jeans? The social minefields of Westchester County's most privileged middle school girls drive the page-turning action of this addictive series, set in New York City's most elite suburban county. The Clique . . . the only thing harder than getting in is staying in.
