Imagineering is the prestigious cross-disciplinary branch of the Walt Disney Company responsible for the conception and completion of their famed theme park attractions, be it the color of a bird's feathers in the Enchanted Tiki Room or the stained glass fixtures found in hotels. This fascinating collection compiles stories from some of the first women Imagineers, whose talent and tenacity allowed them to climb the company's ranks in the late twentieth century. Occasional stories of workplace sexism crop up, but for the most part these anecdotes focus on the Imagineers' accomplishments, their career trajectories, and behind-the-scenes tidbits about the making of the Disney parks, which fans will surely appreciate. The standout contributors include Pam Rank, a lighting designer whose long international tenure and wide range of projects illustrate the best overview of the creativity and curiosity necessary to thrive as an Imagineer; and Becky Bishop, whose two short entries hilariously capture the grit and panic of a determined landscape architect. Even though the 12 women featured here worked in various disciplines, they all encourage enthusiasm, adaptability, and a willingness to learn as budding Imagineers.

Capturing an eraand preserving the stories they have told their daughters, their mentees, their husbands, and their friendsa dozen women Imagineers have written personal stories from their decades designing and building the Disney world-wide empire of theme parks. Illustrated with the womens personal drawings and photos in addition to archival Imagineering images, the book represents a broad swath of Imagineerings creative disciplines during a time of unprecedented expansion. Intertwined with memories of Disney legends are glimpses of what it takes behind the scenes to create a theme park, and the struggles unique to women who were becoming more and more important, visible and powerful in a workplace that was overwhelmingly male.
Each chapter is unique, from a unique Imagineers perspective and experience. These women spent their careers telling stories in three dimensions for the public. Now theyve assembled their stories in print, with the hope that their experiences will continue to entertain and illuminate.
