A young magician learns about social justice the hard way.Twelve-year-old Emma Harris is the new girl at posh Miss Posterity's Academy for Practical Magic, where she will learn to kindle, a complicated process in which elite girls undergo a Kindling Ceremony to harness their magical abilities. The setting is early-1900s Manhattan, with a twist-the wealthy have powers that give them all they need or desire while the poor are snuffed, or deprived of their magic. Emma, whose Mama is dead, has a close bond with her Papa, a brilliant magitect whose high expectations she hopes to live up to. When disaster strikes, Emma is summarily deprived of her wealthy trappings and forced into servitude by the mercenary, two-faced Miss Posterity. Determined to avoid the workhouse, Emma buckles down and is befriended by the school maid, Izzy O'Donnell. Aided by house dragon Figgy, the girls hatch a plot to kindle themselves and escape. Emma's true personality comes to the fore in extremis, and she learns compassion for others, regardless of class. With plenty of drama and heroic rescues, this fantasy holds a lot of appeal for magic-loving readers, including fun touches like bland food that becomes delicious with the touch of a crystal and rooms that move around, Hogwarts style. Main characters are White; some secondary characters reflect the diversity of New York City.Fast-paced and warmhearted with a satisfying conclusion. (Fantasy. 8-13)

Gr 5-7 Emma Harris has led a sheltered life, following her wealthy Magitect father from city to city as he designs fantastical buildings, and she rarely makes friends. When he drops her off at Miss Posterity's Academy for Practical Magic, it is expected that Emma will do well and will kindle and cement her magic so that she may join her father in his business. Meanwhile, Izzy, the school servant girl, is expected to let her magic snuff out rather than be kindled so that she may serve the wealthy without them having to worry about rebellion. When Emma's father unexpectedly dies, leaving her penniless, she must work alongside Izzy, cleaning up after her former friends. Emma learns about classism and friendship as she and Izzy make a secret pact to kindle anyway, even though it is illegal. Emma and Izzy, both cued as white, are likable and the book holds some fun action. The mood and enchanted atmosphere of Emma and Izzy's world are immersive. VERDICT While the characters are drawn a bit thin, this title will be enjoyed by students enamored with magic. Heartfelt, fast-paced, and utterly absorbing, The Gilded Girl is Alyssa Colman's sparkling debut novel about determination, spirit, and the magic of friendship. Any child can spark magic, but only the elite are allowed to kindle it. Those denied access to the secrets of the kindling ritual will see their magic snuffed out before their thirteenth birthday. Miss Posterity's Academy for Practical Magic is the best kindling school in New York City--and wealthy twelve-year-old Emma Harris is accustomed to the best. But when her father dies, leaving her penniless, Emma is reduced to working off her debts to Miss Posterity alongside Izzy, a daring servant girl who refuses to let her magic be snuffed out, even if society dictates she must. Emma and Izzy reluctantly form a pact: If Izzy teaches Emma how to survive as a servant, Emma will reveal to Izzy what she knows about magic. Along the way, they encounter quizzes that literally pop, shy libraries, and talking cats (that is, house dragons). But when another student's kindling goes horribly wrong, revealing the fiery dangers of magic, Emma and Izzy must set aside their differences or risk their magic being snuffed out forever.
