Gr 4-6-In a lively, conversational style, each author discusses a specific aspect of dance. Performance takes readers through the trials, tribulations, and ultimately the triumph of preparing for and finally participating on stage. Some specialized vocabulary, such as "cleanup" rehearsal, is introduced and explained. Inserts with bits of advice, ranging from taking notes on choreography to dealing with stage fright, are scattered throughout. Dance students might find this overview helpful especially if they have never been in a recital. Ballet provides a guided tour through this special art form, briefly describing its history and then discussing many of the day-to-day aspects, such as a typical class, proper dress, and nutrition. One chapter addresses dancing on pointe, the difficulties it poses, and the importance of the proper fit and preparation of shoes. The book ends by exploring the various parts of a ballet performance. Color and black-and-white photos are scattered throughout both books; in Ballet, there is not much recognizable ethnic diversity among the dancers.
