Written by a professional geographer, this entry in the Modern World Nations series presents an overview of U.S. geography, history, economy, modern government, and culture. The author's outlook is strongly positive; proclaiming that the country "is a land for which superlatives come easy," he notes, for instance, that it alone contains every kind of climate, suffers more kinds of natural disasters than any other, enjoys a standard of living second to none, and "stands atop the world's countries in terms of tolerance." He goes on to develop the thesis that the key to the U.S.' spectacular growth and success lies in its unparalleled diversity of climates and landforms, plus a national self-identity that trumps ethnic origins and includes the use of a single language as a central feature. Illustrated with a scanty selection of color photos, and closing with a detailed "facts at a glance" section followed by a brief multimedia resource list, this assignment title offers a more opinionated alternative to Martin Hintz's United States of America (2004), in the Enchantment of the World series. Suggest Jennifer Armstrong's browsable American Story (2006), a compendium of true tales drawn from U.S. history, as an entertaining counterpoint.
