Gr 5-8-These three volumes are written in a textbook-like style that is accessible but not remotely recreational. All of them are organized logically, with explanations of how the organisms were discovered, how they live, what they eat, and which illnesses they cause. Germ Warfare goes even further with a chapter on protecting ourselves. All include text boxes with useful snippets of information about such things as how to remove a tick safely or how to tell if sushi is safe to eat. The illustrations are informative, featuring plenty of colorful, close-up photos of macrophages, bacilli, anthrax, and even a tapeworm that looks a lot like E. T. Useful additions.-Christine A. Moesch, City of Tonawanda Public Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Although all disease-causing microorganisms are technically parasites, the word is usually used to describe disease-causing organisms--such as protozoa and worms--that are larger than microscopic. Such organisms can cause terrible diseases such as blindness, and malaria, especially in underdeveloped countries with poor water supplies and sanitary systems. Clear, easy-to-understand explanations and microphotographs help readers understand the nature of these germs.
