LC 2006018191. ea vol: 32p. (Finding Patterns Series). photos. further reading. glossary. index. Web sites. CIP. Capstone/A+ Bks 2006. PLB $23.93. Gr 1-2 In each book, a pattern is defined as a repeated shape or color. The bright, colorful photographs are sure to appeal to children. Unfortunately, the series is plagued by inconsistent quality. Some pictures contain recognizable patternsa caterpillars stripes, a spider web, a row of gummy bears, a referees shirt, a girls beaded braids, and a stone walkway. Other examples are not as obvious and may even be confusingtriplets as a natural-born pattern, an urban fire escape, kiwifruit seeds. Each title contains a glossary that defines unfamiliar terms, but young readers are not going to flip from picture to glossary. It isnt clear if these books are meant to be an introduction to patterns for young children or a spot the pattern challenge for those who are slightly older. Some health-conscious adults may object to Food Patterns emphasis on junk food. Animal Patterns is the most effective title. Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI
