Adapting Shakespeare's plays to a graphic-novel format isn't easy, as the language needs a particularly firm scaffolding of expression and gesture. As part of the new Manga Shakespeare series, this adaptation, set in modern-day Tokyo, does a competent job of combining manga-style art and abridged dialogue to immerse the reader in the world of the play. Although the richness of the language may be lost, the script keeps the spirit of the story intact, hitting all the major speeches. The art is occasionally muddied by too-similar gray-scale patterns, but the layout and characters are energetic and iconic. By situating the play in modern Tokyo among rival yakuza, or organized-crime families, Appignanesi and Leong present manga fans with a world they will recognize.

Traditional manga styling—large eyes, incredibly graceful figures, expressive backdrops, and Chibi (small and cute) panels to express highly emotional moments—combine seamlessly with Western elements—left to right pagination and straightforward panel layout. Set in modern Tokyo, with the Capulets and Montagues recast as organized-crime rivals, and abridged enough to move quickly without sacrificing content or meaning, this racy retelling gets to the heart of the love story and the foolish rivalry that dooms it. The opening color pages with the cast of characters drawn large will help readers follow the story, as will the plot summary at the end. Indeed, graphic format may be the closest text can come to simulating the stage, and the art makes it relevant for a new generation—including an image of a cell phone with "No Signal" to explain why Romeo doesn't know Juliet is really alive. Voice of Youth AdvocatesThe plays of Shakespeare have been adapted to manga format in this series. The adaptations include certain plot changes that allow the story to lend itself to the format. For instance, Hamlet is set in Denmark's future cyber world of 2017, where global climate change has devastated the earth. Romeo and Juliet is set in present-day Tokyo, and the two star-crossed lovers are children of feuding mafia families or yakuza. The original text of the plays is used but adapted to fit the story line. These differences will most likely prevent a student from substituting the manga format for reading the actual plays. For the manga lover, however, these alterations modernize and excite the story. The action and love scenes are preserved without the graphic sex and violence, making both titles appropriate for middle schoolers as well. Both books begin with colorful portraits of the characters and an introduction to the setting. They are beautifully illustrated, and the presentation is sure to grip even adult manga fans. Reluctant readers who appreciate manga and who would not think of picking up the work of Shakespeare are sure to gravitate toward these titles. Even if the text puts them off, they will be drawn to the illustrations. These adaptations would make wonderful additions to any school or public library's manga collection.-Victoria Vogel.

Enter Abraham and Balthasar
sampson. My naked weapon is out; quarrel, I will back thee.
gregory. How! turn thy back and run?
sampson. Fear me not.
gregory. No, marry; I fear thee!
sampson. Let us take the law of our sides; let them begin.
gregory. I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list.
sampson. Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them; which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it.
abraham. Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?

montague. benvolio. Alas! that love, so gentle in his view, Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof.
romeo. Alas! that love, whose view is muffled still, Should, without eyes, see pathways to his will. Where shall we dine? O me! What fray was here? Yet tell me not, for I have heard it all. Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love. Why then, O brawling love! O loving hate! O any thing! of nothing first create. O heavy lightness! serious vanity!
