ALA Booklist (Sun Jun 01 00:00:00 CDT 2008)

Part of the author's Civil Rights Leaders series, this lively political biography blends Jackson's life story with the national struggle for civil rights. On each double-page spread, a full-page, unframed photo and text in bold type tell the story of Jackson's experiences growing up in the segregated South. Next, the focus is on his leadership role in protest marches and sit-ins; his work with Martin Luther King, and with Chicago's Freedom Coalition, Operation PUSH, the Rainbow Coalition, and more; as well as Jackson's runs for president and his work for peace around the world. The words in bold type in the text are intrusive and unnecessary; the final glossary is enough. A solid introduction for young grade-schoolers to the leader and a host of timely issues. Directions for accessing a publisher-maintained list of Web resources is provided, although a traditional bibliography would have been a welcome addition, too.
