ALA Booklist (Mon May 01 00:00:00 CDT 2006)

Like other titles in the Healthy Eating with MyPyramid series, this book encourages young children to make positive food choices. Full-page, full-color photographs show children of many ages and ethnicities enjoying healthy snacks. The minimal text, which could easily be tackled by somewhat older elementary students still working on basic reading skills, explains that snacks help fuel the body. All nutritional information in this series reflects the USDA's new MyPyramid teaching tool, which is prominently displayed throughout the book. Appended are more snack ideas, a glossary, a bibliography, and a note about the Internet search site -FactHound, which will fetch additional sites on this topic. These high-quality illustrations and basic words offer an alternative to commercials, magazines, and movies, that show the hyperconsumption of junk food.

PreS-Gr 2-Perhaps best suited for classroom libraries, these books foster body and health awareness. Bright, full-page color photographs show children of various ethnicities demonstrating the concepts suggested in the texts. Sentences are simple, with plenty of repetition. Nonreaders will be able to get the messages from the pictures, which feature sound forms of exercise, show when to drink water, and depict nutritious snacks. Although a picture in Active shows a boy riding a bike that is too big for him, most of the photos are engaging and realistic. These titles promote the MyPyramid government Web site and suggest FactHound as a safe source for links to additional information.-Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
