Annotation: Radical, feminist, writer, suffragist - Matilda Joslyn Gage changed the course of history. She fought for equal rights not dependent on sex, race, class, or creed. Yet her name has faded into obscurity, and she is forgotten when her comrades, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, are celebrated. In an attempt to explain this, Angelica Shirley Carpenter explores Gage's life, including her rise and fall within the movement she helped build.

Most Americans have heard of Susan B. Anthony. Many know of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer. But Matilda Joslyn Gage, who pushed the boundaries of women's rights, is not as familiar. History, it's said, is written by the winners, and Carpenter explores in the latter chapters why a falling out over withheld credit and appreciation well as Gage's stance as a Freethinker d to her subsequent near omission in the biographies of Anthony and Stanton. Born to abolitionists, whose Cicero, New York, home was a stop on the Underground Railroad, Gage, as a child, helped her doctor father as a physician's assistant. As she grew older, her strong feelings about abolition intertwined with her passion for women's rights; she attended the first suffrage convention, in Albany, and forged a decades-long partnership with Anthony and Stanton, speaking, writing, and organizing with as much fervor as her better-known comrades. This impeccably researched narrative is often lively but also dense with detail, with many photos extending the text. Gage is a forgotten heroine, and those interested in women's history will appreciate this restoration.
