The journey of a young girl who would come to have a significant impact on the world around her. Many young readers are familiar with Beyoncé as an artist today, but this unofficial biography delves into how she became the icon she is today. Early chapters start with a 7-year-old Beyoncé, who is about to perform at her first talent show. These chapters lay the foundation for the narrative and Beyoncé's career-demonstrating her famous work ethic and the sacrifices she made along the way. Readers follow Beyoncé into her teen and young adult years as a member of Destiny's Child, giving space to the trials she faced but ultimately shining a light on her accomplishments during that time. Although relatively little time is given to Beyoncé in the present day, the author notes highlights such as the births of her children and barriers broken, such as becoming the first Black woman to headline at Coachella. The casual narration, occasional phrases or sentences set in display type, and cartoon illustrations will appeal to young readers. Callout boxes featuring icons that young Beyoncé admired are located throughout, exposing the audience to artists they may not yet be familiar with. The messages of perseverance and hard work ring clear, sometimes coming across as overstated. An informative, relaxed biography following Beyoncé's rise to stardom. (timeline, glossary, notes, bibliography, index) (Biography. 7-12)

She has created countless hits, including “Crazy in Love,” “Single Ladies,” and “Formation.” Beyond music, she is a successful businesswoman and activist who helps bring issues of race and gender into the global conversation.
