Gr 4-6 Color photographs, reproductions, diagrams, and maps are liberally sprinkled throughout these attractive books. Numerous sidebars offer tangential information. Unfortunately, the narrative flow is often interrupted by all of this ancillary material, the usefulness of which is questionable. In Fulton , for example, a full-page diagram of Saverys pump is unlabeled, confusing, and does nothing to extend learning. It is a stretch to even classify Mendel as a biography when only five pages are biographicalthe rest of the book discusses everything from monasteries to microscopes, with quite a bit on genetics. The format works best with the information presented in Pasteur . While these titles may not foster sustained reading, they may spark an interest in science.

Includes bibliographical references (page 38) and index.
Robert Fulton was a mechanic, artist, inventor, and engineer. He worked hard to improve earlier inventions by adding his own ideas. He took the idea of the steam engine and built the first successful steamboat. He also improved waterways called canals and designed an attack. His research made traveling by boat much easier, and his work has inspired engineers today to develop their own ideas and inventions. For information on other engineers, read Mechanical Engineering, another book in the Mission: Science series.
