School Library Journal

Gr 5-7-Antarctica provides a brief history and information about this vast continent's climate, ecology, and scientific research. In addition, there is material on related careers and people, and the harmful impact of tourists. The page about Ann Bancroft, one of the first women to cross the region "on foot," refers readers to a Web site for her motivational programs. Good discussions of the ozone layer and the Antarctic Treaty, and useful maps lend this book to research. The second volume presents an overview of global warming, greenhouse effects, and complications involving the Kyoto Protocol. Both books include mainly color photographs, and there is some duplication between them. These survey titles are acceptable for reports.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
