ALA Booklist (Wed Oct 01 00:00:00 CDT 2003)

From the All Aboard Reading series, this Station Stop high-interest title features skateboarding stars Hawk and MacDonald. Friends, often competitors, sometimes doubles partners, they dominated skateboarding competitions in the first years of the X Games, which began in 1995. In addition to exciting moments from competitions, the book includes brief biographical information and color photos that show the skateboarders in action. Sidebars fill in information on the history, the types of skateboarding, and the X Games, and definitions of skateboarding terms are appended. Children who like to skateboard as well as those who just like to watch will enjoy this glimpse at two extraordinary athletes who earned respect for their sport.

This early-reader biography details how its subjects became the biggest names in skateboarding history and helped draw attention to the sport with their stunts and annual appearance in the Vert Doubles Competition at the X Games. While the text could benefit from more and better-quality photos of the skateboarders in action, it does a creditable job of explaining skateboarding moves and lingo. Glos.

Gr 2-4-In alternating chapters, readers learn about these superstars. The text is dry, making their stories appealing only to someone extremely interested in skateboarding. Each chapter ends with a paragraph about some aspect of the sport. Full-color photographs of Hawk and Macdonald appear throughout, and a few pictures show children performing tricks. However, the illustrations are often grainy and not cropped correctly. An additional title at best.-Rachel Fox, Port Washington Public Library, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
