%% This is a multi-book review: SEE also the title Get Up and Go!. %% Ages 68. These additions to the MathStart series use short stories and bright, appealing pictures to illustrate concepts taught in mathematics units. In Get Up a dog observes his favorite little girl as she gets up in the morning and keeps track of her time--five minutes for a snuggle with Teddy, three minutes to wash: How many minutes have gone by so far? The minutes are shown as colored line segments stretched out for easy counting. The buoyant energy of Greenseid's acrylic paintings helps keep the tone upbeat. In Too Many a young kangaroo is looking for someone to play with, but everyone is busy. The two platypuses each have to slice a kiwi, squeeze two oranges, pour three cans of ginger ale, and scoop four big scoops of sherbet. The next page graphically lays out what's going on: 2 x 1 kiwi 2 kiwis, 2 x 2 oranges 4 oranges, and so on. The artwork tells the story with an economy of gesture and a boundless sense of fun. These volumes are too purposeful as teaching devices to be entirely satisfying as picture books. Still, teachers may find them useful in the classroom. (Reviewed October 15, 1996)

It's Kangaroo's birthday, and he wants to play. But his friends are all busy arranging his surprise party. The text neatly incorporates multiplication to show the number of items Kangaroo's friends use to prepare a cake, punch, presents, and party decorations. Boldly rendered illustrations fill the pages with friendly Australian animals. A list of suggested activities and related books is included.
