ALA Booklist (Sat Apr 01 00:00:00 CST 2000)

The drawings are now in color, the pages are larger, and the once yellow background on the jacket is now sleek white, but the appeal of Steig's wordplay classic, first published 30 years ago, remains intact. The book's clever humor is still irresistible: I M A U-M B-N, a boy patiently explains to his attentive dog. U R N N-M-L. New generations will delight in puzzling out the letter-and-number messages, aided by the simple, thickly outlined drawings and an answer key. A worthy replacement for collections' battered original copies. (Reviewed April 1, 2000)

Horn Book (Tue Aug 01 00:00:00 CDT 2000)

Steig's classic word-game picture book (in which single letters and numerals are strung together to make sentences 4 U 2 decode) has newly colorized illustrations and is still X-L-N fun. (An answer key is included, but no P-K-N if you can help it.)

Publishers Weekly (Fri Oct 06 00:00:00 CDT 2023)

Originally published in black-and-white, William Steig added color to his 1968 puzzler (in 2000). """"Reformatted and redesigned to take advantage of the spring-fresh colors, this edition retains all the fun of the original-and adds a handy answer key,"""" noted PW. Ages 5-8. (May)
