It's easy to understand Johnson's appeal to kids: like a real-life Looney Tune, he's as likely to amuse you with an acrobatic eyebrow as he is beating the stuffing out of an antagonist. Using the uncomplicated language and large text that exemplifies the Robbie Reader Contemporary Biography series, Kjelle breezes through five short chapters on the life of the thespian once known as pro wrestling's "The Rock." A map of Samoa helps illustrate his heritage (his mother was Samoan, his father African Canadian), before describing his adolescence, a period marked by a bad temper and frequent disciplinary action. By the end of high school, however, Johnson had become a football star, although injuries prevented ascension into the NFL. He then joined the World Wrestling Federation, and the rest is butt-kicking, chair-smashing history. Kjelle is unusually frank about the fictional aspects of pro wrestling, which will help young readers interpret the apparent violence. Personal details, like Johnson's divorce, are glossed over, but it's his spectacle that attracts kids, and that is well captured.
