From the Robin Hill School series of Ready-to-Read books, this cheerful paperback shows Mrs. Connor's first-grade class planting seeds, tending their garden, and harvesting lettuces, radishes, pea pods, and sunflowers. Even Neil, whose initial comment on vegetables was "Yuck," finds the salad made from his class' garden produce "Yummy!" Though the occasional name, such as Ayanna or Eigen, may be challenging for beginning readers, otherwise the vocabulary is fairly easy, the typeface is large, and the sentences are short. Cartoon-style ink drawings, bright with colorful washes, illustrate this simple story in a satisfying way.
