Starred Review What to do with a little boy who loves to paint his fingernails? Celebrate him, of course! The boy, who is Indian, tells this story in his own voice, making it clear how he likes to express himself by matching the colors of his fingernails to his mood or the world around him: purple for the mysterious dream he had, the brightest yellow on a sunshiny day, the sweetest pink after receiving a loving hug from Dadaji (his grandfather). But what to do on those days when he experiences a whole flood of emotions? Ah, therein lies the tale. This story obviously offers a, well, golden opportunity for an artist, and Loring-Fisher takes advantage of it with her well-executed mixed-media illustrations informed with a riot of colors. Softly textured and opalescent, the artwork reflects the boy's gentle spirit and the loving support he receives from his mother and grandfather. His frowning father disapproves of his son's habit, but Dadaji hugs his grandson, saying, "You're my colorful child." The innocent, gender-stereotype-defying tale joins a modest but growing number of picture books that introduce young people to tolerance for and celebration of the variety of human experience.

When a young boy paints his nails with his moms nail polish, he discovers the most important thing of all: the magic of being his true self.

As the long late summer day stretches ahead of them, a young boy eagerly looks forward to his favorite timepainting-your-nails time. He know that when he dips into those magical bottles of nail polish, he will discover a color to express his every mood and feeling. Purple is the color of magic and mystery. White is the color of endless possibilities. At times, his papa frowns and says, "What have you done to your nails?" At other times, he says, "Why dont you paint on paper instead?" But the little boy knows that painting his nails makes his hands look beautiful.

This color-filled story celebrates the joy of finding out who you are and embracing the courage to be yourself.
