PreS-Gr 1-These brief, pictorial treatments attempt to show the gradations of expression associated with confusion, sadness, and fear. Simple sentences such as, "My eyes get big when I am scared," are accompanied by a full-page color photograph of various children demonstrating big eyes or furrowed brows-whatever trait the text specifies. The point that different people express emotions differently is certainly made, but some of the pictures could easily express any emotion or no emotion, and so may do more to confound than to clarify. A bilingual index listing between six to eight terms shares space with a pictorial dictionary, showing fragments of some of the photos labeled with facial features (mouth, eyelash, etc.). The texts are bland and unexciting. Saxton Freymann's Vegetal Como Eres (Scholastic, 2001) is cleverly illustrated and allows for the exercise of imagination and the discussion of emotions. Some students may not know what a sad person looks like, and therefore they may not interact with that person appropriately. With a focus on ten different children's expressions, students will read age-appropriate text that explains what different parts of a sad face are doing.
