In Wish, Nicholas, a big-hearted crippled boy and a skilled toymaker, is transformed by angels into St. Nicholas. First Flight continues the story as Nicholas gets quarreling elves to work together to make toys, coaxes reindeer into believing they can fly, and makes his debut flight, despite near-sabotage. Both stories, written in an exclamatory tone, lack coherent logic. But the sappy, moralizing tales and the sentimental pictures that look like they're lifted from a low-budget animated film are a perfect match. [Review covers these Nicholas Stories titles: The Boy with a Wish and The First Flight of Saint Nicholas.]
