Gr 3-6-These books open with a discussion of the respective country's history and culture, followed by a profile of an artist. The heart of each title is a series of spreads, with a page of matter-of-fact text describing a specific sight, animal, person, or symbol opposite step-by-step drawings and instructions on how to sketch it. The style is reminiscent of Lee J. Ames's drawing books. The use of red and black lines generally does a good job of demonstrating what to add as the drawings progress, although some details are too small to distinguish. Color photos are also included. The first title highlights a camel, the mask of King Tut, Queen Nefertiti, the temple of Ramses II, and more. The fleur-de-lis, Notre Dame Cathedral, Joan of Arc, and the Eiffel Tower are featured in France. A Japanese crane, Mount Fuji, a Sumo wrestler, and Nijubashi Bridge are in the third title. Each work concludes with a bare-bones time line and a "Fact List" that includes the country's area, population, currency, popular or national dish, major religions, etc. These unique works should withstand lots of use and can serve double duty as supplemental resources and as drawing books.-Lynn K. Look at a globe of the world and Japan appears to be a tiny string of faraway islands. Though small in size, Japan is a powerful country and an economic world leader, with an impressive cultural history. From Samurais to Sumo wrestlers, kids can learn about and then draw some of the exciting people who represent Japan. They can admire the beautiful temples that were inspired by Japan's two major religions, Buddhism and Shinto, and learn about the history of a royal family that spans 2,000 years on the throne, the longest served in the world.
