Horn Book (Sat Apr 01 00:00:00 CST 2000)

Although the writing is dry and the black-and-white photos are often poorly reproduced, this volume features an interesting array of contemporary women leaders--Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Corazón Aquino, Benazir Bhutto, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, and Gro Harlem Brundtland. A final chapter provides brief biographies of additional women leaders. The book will be useful for student reports and research. Bib., ind.

Gr 7-10-Biographical sketches of seven women who led their respective countries, including Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Corazon Aquino, Benazir Bhutto, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, and Gro Harlem Brundtland. Each entry contains a description of the nation's political history leading up to the woman's election. A map and fact boxes assist in explaining the socioeconomic factors affecting the political climate. The women's accomplishments and milestones are presented in a rather dry text, which communicates the necessary facts, but probably would not attract general readers. Some of the political explanations are confusing due to the complicated histories of countries such as Nicaragua or Pakistan. Black-and-white photographs adequately portray each head of state and represent highlights of the events that took place during her term of office. Fourteen other women who have ruled countries receive brief mention in the final chapter. A useful resource for reports.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
