Six episodes featuring a cast of deliberately diverse high-school kids offer a somewhat uneven spin on student power, cliques, puppy love, and other issues of real concern and interest to younger children. The cast of toothy, mop-headed teens includes hard-working Janey, UFO-obsessed Ciel, snotty Tara O'Toole, awkward Roland, and cool, cool The Skate. Together the teens put a school radio station on the air (thus the book's title), chaperone an ill-fated sixth-grade field trip, and get into a truly hilarious tangle when a love note written by one to another of the cast works its way through the hands of each one. Fisher states that she began this project because libraries and bookstores don't carry single-issue comics, a claim that isn't quite true, but as she suggests, the book is unlikely to offend the sensibilities of a conservative adult shopping for a fourth grader (there is a rousing field-trip chorus of 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall), and although this is a rather scattered package, the panels are nicely packed, the action moves steadily, and there are some real gems within.
Enough is enough. Something has to be done about the light music that drones through the halls, torturing students each morning at Jackson Hill High. Come along as Janey Wells and her mismatched group of teenage merry men take on the status quo and pump up the jam on their school's PA system.
