Gr 2-4-Previously published in the U.K., these titles focus on the use of punctuation marks. Each book tells the story of a person who embodies his or her eponymous punctuation mark. Alan Apostrophe is the captain of a fishing boat who got used to wearing his apostrophe-shaped eye patch as a boy and continued to do so after his "lazy eye" was fixed. He drops his h's and g's, truncating many words, and sometimes using the possessive. Christopher Comma has a series of jobs, loves to sing and to talk on and on, and has a comma-shaped mouth. Emma Exclamation Point is a tall, thin teacher, with a nose and mouth made of an exclamation point, who loves to make emotion-charged statements and to give commands. A checklist at the back of each book recaps the rules for the use of the punctuation. These marks are printed in exaggerated bold face throughout the texts. The accompanying cartoon illustrations are bright and humorous, contributing to the books' appeal. These are worthy additions that teachers will find particularly helpful. They may want to pair them with Robin Pulver's Punctuation Takes a Vacation (Holiday House, 2003).-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
