(Primary Sources of Famous People in American History Series). photos. reprods. chron. glossary. index. notes. Web sites. CIP. Rosen . 2004. PLB $21.25. Gr 2-3 These cursory biographies, consisting of bare-bones facts strung together in short, choppy sentences, fail to capture the excitement of the lives of these famous individuals. In Crockett , the battle of the Alamo is related in five terse sentences: "The Alamo was an old Spanish Mission. Davy and the army got trapped there. The Mexican army attacked. They killed Davy and everyone else. No one was left alive." The accounts of the showdown at O.K. Corral in Earp and the exploits of the James gang in James are hardly more interesting. The illustrations, which include an impressive array of period photos, paintings, and documents, are better than the dry texts, but some are difficult to read. Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

Wyatt Earp was best known as the fearless frontier lawman, and as the survivor in the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Part myth, and part truth, Earp's life is the stuff that legends are made of. He lived during a time of rapid westward expansion, when bigger-than-life characters aroused the imagination and stirred the attention of storytellers across the country. Both lawman, and lawbreaker, he was a tireless self-promoter who encouraged the legends and the stories. Primary source images and fun fact boxes offer insight into this fascinating Wild West character.
